Wilson Bentley Snowflake Design - Papier d'emballage 70x100.

En 1885, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (alias Snowflake Bentley, l'homme flocon de neige) a attaché un microscope à un appareil photo à soufflet dans sa ferme de Bentley Jericho, Vermont, et a pris la première photo d'un seul flocon de neige. Bentley a écrit en 1925 :

"Chaque cristal était un chef-d'œuvre de design et aucun design n'a jamais été répété. Lorsqu'un flocon de neige a fondu, ce dessin a été perdu à jamais.
