Jan Toorop's spellbinding Art Nouveau poster for the Nederlandse Olie Fabriek (The Dutch Oil Company) advertises the company's "salad oil". The poster became known as the "salad oil style". Jan Toorop (1858–1928) was born on the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies. He moved the Netherlands in 1870, studying art at Amsterdam's Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Spells in The Hague, Brussels and at in his wife's native England were followed by the family's move to Katwijk aan Zee on the Dutch coast. It was three that he developed his signature swirls.
